Stupid ones are lucky ones
by Barbora Misakova

It was just yesterday what I was talking to my parents about college studies and its terrible condition here in Slovakia. While I was expressing my disappointment from its quality, my parents were casting their minds back to the socialism when pass the exam was not so easy as today. Studying wasn’t piece of cake as it is today, as there was no one who would give you anything for free. If you didn’t have intelligence and you were not able to effectively use your brain, you couldn’t pass it. While during 1970s was bachelor’s degree a rarity, today it is nothing special. Everyone has a bachelor’s degree, but the saddest thing on it is that not eve! ryone really deserves it! As Marty Nemko, a career and education expert who used to teach at U.C. Berkley’s Graduate School of Education, says: “There is tremendous pressure to push kids through.” And that is the reason why this piece of paper means nothing today and where else does it show the best as on your salary? While quality of education is falling rapidly, the price students have to pay for it is on the other hand growing too fast. As the US statistics show, two-thirds of all students leave college with outstanding loans. But when they get to the work world their price is low as their expensive college degree is actually worthless in job market. There is such a saying here in Slovakia that says: “Stupid ones are lucky ones.” And I am still more and more confident, it is a holy truth!
